The Emperor’s Harpsichord: following the legacy of Diego de Pantoja

Chinese and European period instruments come together to reconstruct the lively musical life of the Chinese court in commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the birth of the Spanish Jesuit Diego de Pantoja, the first European who, together with Matteo Ricci, established cultural and diplomatic relations with the Forbidden City thanks to two clocks and a keyboard instrument. Pantoja taught, for the first time, the art of playing the harpsichord at the Chinese Imperial court. The programme explores the music landscapes of this amazing episode of dialogue and musical exchange between two cultures which were a little closer in that period.

Todos los Tonos y Ayres. First Spanish ensemble specializing in the research on early music from East Asia and China in particular. Their aims are the dissemination of the historical and musical relations in past times between Europe and Asia, as well as the presence of Iberian music beyond its borders. They have carried out artistic and research projects in collaboration with entities such as the Confucius Institute, Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias or the Cervantes Institute, and they have performed concerts in the Granada Festival (FEX), Sancti Johannis Festival, MoMuA, Gijón Early Music Festival or Meet in Beijing Arts Festival (China), among others. Its activity has awakened interest of several creators as well as national and international media, such as the Chinese national television CCTV or the filmmaker José Luis López Linares for his last documentary, which is devoted to the first globalization promoted by Spain. Recently, they have recorded their first album: El clave del Emperador (IBS Classical, 2021).

Íliber Ensemble. Devoted to the research and performance of early music with historically informed criteria and using period instruments, the group was founded in May 2013 in Granada by the harpsichordist Darío Tamayo. Its activity has focused on recovering repertoires consigned to oblivion, with special attention to the Spanish Baroque musical heritage. They have performed concerts in Meet In Beijing Arts Festival (China), Granada Festival, MusaE (organized by the Spanish Ministry of Culture), and early music festivals in Granada, Córdoba, Úbeda-Baeza or Vélez Blanco, among others. This activity has brought them to halls such as Manuel de Falla Auditorium (Granada), Palau de la Música (Valencia), Daning Theatre (Shanghai), Ateneo de Madrid, or the Constitutional Court of Spain, receiving a great welcome from the specialized critics. They have made recordings for RTVE and China Central Television (CCTV), and they have launched two albums in the IBS Classical label: Durón: La Guerra de los Gigantes (2019) and El clave del Emperador (2021).
