In Sorrow’s Footsteps: Allegri, Palestrina, MacMillan, Jackson

The Marian Consort presents paired settings of two of the most emotionally-charged sacred texts of the Christian tradition: Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere, considered by many to be the archetype of musical settings of this most intensely personal of penitential psalms, is contrasted with James Macmillan’s highly personal response to this prayer. Palestrina’s magisterial double-choir Stabat Mater, which relates and shares in Mary’s suffering and anguish, and which Richard Wagner described as being “full of unspeakable emotion”, is heard alongside a fresh response to the emotional depths of this extraordinary text from one of the UK’s foremost choral composers, Gabriel Jackson.
