Magister Musicae: Sebastián de Vivanco (c.1551-1622)

The Portuguese Officium Ensemble dedicates this program to the polyphonist Sebastián de Vivanco, chapel master of the cathedrals of Lérida, Segovia, Ávila and Salamanca, whose IV centenary of his death is commemorated in 2022. And it does so through one of its most fascinating and hidden treasures: his collection of motets, disseminated in printed books and in manuscript sources, some of which present both new works and versions of the printed motets with important divergences. The program is completed with a careful selection of little-known pieces by Portuguese contemporaries from the golden period of Iberian polyphony..

Officium Ensemble. It has established itself as one of the most prominent Portuguese vocal ensembles dedicated to early music.  Since its foundation in 2000 by director Pedro Teixeira, the ensemble has achieved a noted purity of sound; a result of the group’s constant striving for balance, blending, and pure vocal emission.  The commitment and expressiveness of this select group of 12 singers has lead Officium Ensemble’s performances to be acclaimed for their vivacity, expressive contour, and responsiveness to the text.
