Trios, Quartets and Quintets by Luigi Boccherini

The transfer of Italian musicians and music to Spain leads inevitably to think about Luigi Boccherini. With an awesome catalogue including more than 500 works, this composer is mostly distinguished by his chamber music (42 trios, 91 quartets, more than 100 quintets…). Europa Galante brings us some of the treasures of Boccherini’s chamber production, such as the Quintet for strings and guitar G448, with its famous Fandango; or the 12 variations known as La ritirata di Madrid which were included as the final number in two of his quintets.

Fabio Biondi, violin and conductor. From his early developments, he was guided by pioneers in a new approach to historical music performance, and his repertoire comprises three centuries. Biondi’s infectious curiosity and his determination to put music first mark him out in his search for an “original language”, both in globally known works and in lesser-known masterpieces. In 1990 Biondi founded Europa Galante, which quickly became the foremost Italian period ensemble. Biondi and his ensemble have forged a reputation for “fresh, vibrant performances”, according to The New York Times, and throw new life on Baroque and Classical repertoire, performing at leading international festivals and stages.

Europa Galante. Europa Galante was founded in 1990 by its musical director and internationally acclaimed violinist Fabio Biondi, and quickly established itself as the foremost Italian period instrument ensemble, throwing new life into Baroque and Classical repertoire. The ensemble initially focused on 17th- and 18th-centuries Italian composers. Following the release of its first record dedicated to Vivaldi’s concertos, the ensemble has received worldwide recognition. Europa Galante currently performs a variety of well-known repertoire and lesser-known works, from Händel’s operas and Bach’s orchestral suites, to Rossini’s operas and Boccherini’s chamber music.
