CUARTETO ALBÉNIZ DE PROSEGUR

Romantic Quartets

Mendelssohn and Schubert talk about grief in the face of death. The first pays homage to the figure of his beloved sister Fanny with the String Quartet No. 6, Op. 80 in F minor, Requiem which he composes only two months before he died. Written in the same key as Beethoven’s Serioso Quartet, Op. 95, it shares with it the atmosphere of anguish and foreboding. Fot its part, the String Quartet No. 14, better known as Death and the Maiden, is based on his Lied of the same name with text by M. Claudius. Composed in 1824 by a Schubert who turns his back on love and friendship, it expresses the reactions of a dying young woman to the inevitable presence of the death. It reflects the complicated period of denial of love and friendship that the composer was going through.
