De Santa María: Music to the Virgin in the late Middle Ages

The Byzantine iconic formula of the Maestà –the enthroned Madona with the Child, presented frontally and often accompanied by angels– was very popular in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, coinciding with the intensification of the cult to the Virgin, who was considered a sweet intercessor before God. This program, which is structured into six small sections, presents examples of thirteenth-century music connected to Marian devotion, with a focus on the Cantigas de Santa María.
