Muera Cupido. The theatrical musical tradition in Spain around 1700

As an angry Father Feijoo wrote in 1726, “maestro Durón was the one who introduced foreign fashions into the music of Spain”, although “later these have been so surpassed that if he were resurrected, he would no longer recognize them”. And indeed, our program shows how the fiery Italian style changed Spanish vocal music c. 1700: its old Hispanic traits were still recognizable in Durón, but the great Nebra would incorporate the daring modulations, the aria da capo, the demanding agility in the vocal writing and the other novelties that brought modernity to Spanish Baroque music.
