“Atque interim in Mexico”: Monteverdi and his contemporaries in New Spain

It is fascinating how music evolves in different directions in each part of the world, although towards similar ends. The aesthetic conception of music changed dramatically with Monteverdi, while Gutiérrez de Padilla, Gaspar Fernández and Hernando Franco were filling their music with new rhythms and melodies, inspired by the Mexican popular music tradition, without abandoning the polyphonic approach. In both cases, it was a search for new ways of musical expression.
